Guard Background Details: Fiercely independent and predujiced against all who choose a path unaligned with the natural world, Leliah looks upon most sentient beings as tresspassers -- usurpers raping the plenty of the earth without caring what they give in return. Cold, complacent and deadly, she grew up among a small community of elves secluded deep in the woods, tirelessly honing her skills as an archer. Her potential soon became obvious; her admirably dextrous abilities and above average awareness sped her along to a coveted position as a high ranking ranger in her community. For a time, she led small groups of two or three on hunting missions -- not to hunt animals, or even beasts, but for but one purpose -- to eradicate tresspassers in their wood. As far as she and the others of her kind were concerned, no being unattuned to nature had a right to step foot in their wood -- and they didn't give warnings or second chances. Striking quickly and without compassion, she and her companions mercilessly slaughtered intruder after intruder; many died long before they had any idea as to what was happening. After living many years this way, Leiliah and three of her most promising charges -- beginning snipers themselves -- came upon a company of three humans intruding into the wood. After a quick slaughter, examination of their items proved them rogues; selfish thieves living in folly for their own pleasures. However, further examination proved them at least somewhat skilled; many magical items and trinkets were contained in their many sacks of loot. Deciding that such items could be better used in defense of the natural world, Leliah and her companions split their findings; she kept for herself two magical rings and gloves that seemed to heighten her already impressive dexterity. Many such occurences took place over time; various raids earned her several other magical items, including a magical pack that held more than it seemed physically possible, and a very well crafted, magically imbued longsword, a favored weapon among elves in the unlikely event that one of her clan faced melee combat. Tales of her successes in combat soon reached the highest elders of her clan, who began to take notice of her uncanny aim, even at unheard of distances, and her almost supernaturally devastating shots. Her intensity and devotion to her practice coupled with her aforementioned prowress earned her recognition in the form of rewards from the most powerful among her clan, honors that she did not take lightly, using the new abilities they granted her to further her cause and hone her skills. Continually pushing herself to the limit, Leiliah eventually began hunting alone -- or relatively such. She befriended a young hawk, naming it Yukai, and took him as her sole companion on eradication missions. With Yukai's ability to fly, pass unnoticed among foolish trespassers and communicate with her verbally thanks to a particularly useful honor -- a necklace allowing speech with animals at will -- Leiliah developed a reputation among outsiders as an unseen killer; tresspassers grew more and more infrequent as uninformed, naive gossipers spread tales of a shadowed huntress, killing from a distance and leaving precious few surivivors in her wake. As intruders grew less and less common, Leiliah found herself with more time on her hands, with herself to ponder her path in life. She understood the importance of protecting their sacred home, but many things troubled her -- would it not be better to turn those who had strayed from a respectful path back to one that led to greater appreciation for the earth? How could killing tresspassers right their wrongs? Contemplating these things, Leiliah eventually concluded that she had done as much as she could in the forest; it was time for her to move on. Clearly, none would threaten her home for fear of tales of curses and supernatural hunters, yet she was certain many travesties still existed in the world to be righted. Deciding thus, Leiliah explained her intentions to her elders. None too pleased, they did yet understand her concerns -- she was not the first of their children to decide their path lay outside the forest's boundaries. She was granted a final gift, a wondrously well crafted composite longbow, boasting magical qualities. Upon departing from her home, she was abhorred by the things she saw among "civilized" lands -- humans, who claimed themselves intelligent beings, constructing cities of lifeless stone and confining themselves from nature's hearth with manufactured walls! Disgusted and disheartened, she began to realize that most would be beyond her influence, too attached to a life of corruption with a deadened soul to consider returning to the quite complacence of nature. Unwilling to admit this defeat to her elders, she chose not to return to her forest despite her first urges to do so, opting instead to exist on the outskirts of cities where beauty and life still flourished, teaching those who would listen about her life's philosophy. She continued her vengeful work, however; unable to completely shed her previous lifestyle. While she was willing to give those who wanted to listen a chance, she still had no qualms with killing a miscreant taking the lives of good trees for a few hour's comfort from the cold, or a unfeeling wretch abusing an overworked animal to wrest from it profit for himself. While travelling through a particularly beautiful glade, she one day came upon a band of wretched humans, clearing away living plants for their camp, burning green shoots and wasting meat wrought from innocent animals with reckless abandon. Enraged by this sight, she waited until they had passed out from exhaustion and in many cases drunkeness, then stole about the camp, silencing each one with an arrow as she went. After thus killing each person outside of the tents, she ventured inside, only to be surprised -- a captive prisoner sat, bound hand and feet, along with the corpse of another man. Shocked, she freed the bound man, who told her his story... The man's name was Amlain, a Paladin of Heironeous, and his slain companion and fellow Paladin named Arvin. The men Leiliah had just killed belonged to a lawless, shady, corrupt society bent on the destruction of order -- their latest strike had been on a Temple of Heironeous that Amlain and Arvin had been charged with defending. Outnumbered and overmatched, they were taken prisoner by the rogues and subjected to endless horrors -- Arvin was only recently dead, apparently from starvation. For setting him free, Amlain provided Leiliah with Arvin's Celestial Armor -- Clearly, he no longer needed it, and it was only fitting that he provide his rescuer with some reward. After helping provide Arvin with the respectful burial he deserved, Leiliah parted ways with Amlain -- though he seemed respect worthy enough, she could not relate to a man who fought only for an otherwordly belief -- what of this world? Faced with reasons both in favor of salvation and eradication, Leiliah continues her travels, vowing only to do what is right by her... and the world she serves.
